304 STAINLESS STEEL
Stainless steel has this cool, clean energy— like minimalism meets medieval armor. It’s sleek, strong, and perfect for everyday wear. If you want something that feels powerful, intentional, and totally unfussy, stainless steel is your metal. It doesn’t rust, it doesn’t tarnish, and it holds up beautifully to daily life — basically, it’s built to last.
It’s great for sensitive skin: no lead and very low nickel content.
304 stainless steel doesn’t oxidize like copper-based metals do, so it keeps its shine with almost no effort. Every piece I make is tumbled with stainless steel shot and a burnishing compound to smooth and strengthen the metal and bring out its natural luster. You don’t have to baby it — but if you want to keep it extra nice, wash it after exposure to salt water, sweat, or whenever you notice dullness.
Cleaning: Wash with warm water and mild dish soap, scrub gently with a soft cloth or brush, rinse well, and dry thoroughly. Avoid cleaning with harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
DETAILED COMPOSITION BREAKDOWN:
-
Iron: The base metal, making up the majority of the alloy.
-
Chromium: Typically 18–20% in 304 grade; forms a protective passive layer that resists corrosion.
-
Nickel: Usually 8–10.5%; stabilizes the austenite structure and further improves corrosion resistance.
-
Manganese: Present in small amounts to increase strength and toughness.
-
Silicon: Helps enhance corrosion resistance, present in trace amounts.
-
Carbon: Present in small quantities to control grain size and improve weldability.
IF 304 STAINLESS STEEL CONTAINS NICKEL, WHY IS IT USUALLY SAFE FOR SENSITIVE SKIN?
NICKEL IN STAINLESS STEEL IS TIGHTLY BOUND
In 304 stainless steel, nickel is alloyed — that means it’s chemically bonded together with iron and chromium in the crystal structure of the steel. Because of this:
-
Nickel atoms are not free to migrate to the surface easily.
-
The strong bond reduces how much nickel can be released (this is called nickel ion release).
PASSIVE OXIDE LAYER AS A BARRIER
Stainless steel naturally forms a very thin, stable, protective chromium oxide layer on its surface. This layer:
-
Further prevents nickel (and other metals) from leaching out.
-
Helps make the surface "inert" to the skin.
